Academic Advisor, Running Start

The Running Start Academic Advisor provides holistic academic advising to Running Start students, who are dually enrolled in high school and at Highline College. Time primary function of the Academic Advisor is to advise and teach students as they transition to the college environment. The Academic Advisor guides Running Start students towards the completion of high school graduation requirements and their college program of study. Examples of scope and responsibilities include: helping students identify academic programs, interests and goals, services and resources, and developing proactive strategies and solutions for communicating the steps required for college transition, academic success, career exploration, degree completion, and university transfer. Advising may be conducted on a one-on-one basis, in group or classroom settings, via phone, video conferencing platform, learning management system, and through student programming.

Running Start is a dual-credit program that allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses. Highline College enrolls 1000+ Running Start students annually. The department is responsible for administering the Running Start program, which includes enrollment management, student advising, and support. Running Start is organized within Advising & Enrollment Services unit of the Student Services division. The person in this position is expected to contribute fully as a member of the unit and division, supporting other functions when necessary.

This is a full-time exempt, at will position. This position may require you to work some evenings and weekends.

Essential Tasks Reporting to the Director of Running Start, this position will:
Academic Advising (70%)
• Provide academic advising to Running Start students on academic degree options and requirements, course selection, college policies and processes, university transfer, and career preparation;
• Facilitate new student orientation sessions; present information to new Running Start students on policies and resources, assist students with first quarter course selection;
• Engage students in goal-setting and the development of long-term educational plans, including transfer and career planning;
• Teach students how to navigate the college environment, access campus resources, and utilize advising tools;
• Interpret and communicate academic policies and procedures to students, parents, college faculty and staff, and high school counselors;
• Evaluate unofficial high school and college transcripts to discuss course placement and program eligibility with students;
• Adhere to institutional, state, and federal policies related to confidentiality, program administration and reporting;
• Maintain student records by documenting and summarizing advising sessions;
• Facilitate Running Start information sessions for groups of prospective students, parents, and the general public;
• Make referrals to various campus departments and services when appropriate.
Administrative (20%)
• Assist with developing and updating advising guides, forms, publications, and web pages;
• Develop and coordinate student communication plans for Running Start students and subgroups, utilizing email, phone, social media, and other modes of communication;
• Provide front desk support occasionally; welcome and check in students, respond to general inquiries, receive and process Running Start forms and documents including applications, enrollment forms, and textbook requests;
• Update academic advising training guides and materials as necessary;
• Perform general office tasks such as filing, coding, and scanning as assigned. Community and Professional Development (10%)
• Provide input of policies, processes and procedures to advance the college and unit missions and objectives;
• Actively engage in campus committees, meetings, events, trainings, and professional development opportunities to further develop professional competencies and knowledge;
• Remain well-informed on promising practices and trends in academic advising, student services, and dual enrollment;
• Develop collaborative relationships across campus departments, with high schools, and transfer institutions;
• Serve as a representative of both the department and Highline College at campus and community events. Competencies Required • Capable of working both independently and as a collaborative member of a team;

• Thorough understanding and ability to maintain the confidentiality of protected information;
• Able to navigate an electronic environment; must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Google drive, and web browsers. Familiarity with PeopleSoft desirable;
• Ability to articulate the community college mission through action;
• Demonstrated cultural competency, ability to value diversity, and commit to advancing equity and inclusion;
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills;
• Experience using technology such as Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), G-Suite, databases, surveys, and other web applications.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; AND
• Minimum one year of experience in academic advising, counseling or closely related role.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in education, student development, higher education administration, counseling, psychology or related field from an accredited institution;
• Knowledge of student development theories and promising practices in academic advising;
• Familiarity or experience working with Running Start or similar program;
• Experience working with high school students;
• Experience working with PeopleSoft;
• Fluency in a language that is regionally spoken, other than English.

Supplemental Information

Conditions of Employment Highline College does require COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, staff and faculty –– with waivers for specific exemptions –– for those who physically attend courses, operations, or other in-person activities.
