Shaping a Ballot Measure
Sound Transit is engaging with communities across the region to develop a Sound Transit system expansion ballot measure for voter consideration as soon as November 2016.
Sound Transit 3 will expand congestion-free light rail service farther and deeper into King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. It will mean increasing demand for predicable, reliable and efficient mass transit service in the area where more than 40 percent of Washington residents live and 70 percent of the state’s economic activity takes place.
By 2040, the region will have nearly a million more residents—an increase of 30 percent—and support more than a million new jobs. All of these new people and jobs are expected to boost travel demand by about 40 percent. The Sound Transit 3 measure will respond to the public’s call to take action. A scientific telephone survey conducted by EMC Research in December showed that 70 percent of the region’s voters support a ballot measure with a hypothetical $15 billion in mass transit investments around the region.
Sound Transit is requesting broad funding authority from the Washington State legislature to allow a ballot proposal for the transit projects and services that the public supports. Public meetings around the region and online involvement opportunities will get underway in summer 2015. In early 2016, the Sound Transit Board is scheduled to issue a Draft System Plan for public review.
