Art blooms in Federal Way on Blue Poppy Day! Join us at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden on May 14th to celebrate the fusion of natural and artistic beauty. The Garden will be filled with musical and visual performances. In partnership with the Federal Way Arts Commission, dozens of juried artists will present and sell their unique, handmade work. This year?s feature artist is Ms. Pat Yager, a local artist specializing in watercolor. The event will feature a variety of musical performances, from jazz to classical. The Bonnie Birch Band will stroll through the Garden while performing on the accordion, guitar and tuba. Visitors of all ages flock to the 3,000 square foot Meconopsis Meadow at the height of its bloom. Each Meconopsis 'Lingholm' (Himalayan Blue Poppy) is a vibrant blue, up to six inches wide on a 3 foot stalk. With frilly blue petals and a golden interior, these flowers are natural artistry at its finest. Interplanted with towering, 14 foot tall Himalayan Giant Lilies, the meadow transports visitors to visions of far Tibet. The RSBG is also excited to open and share its new Blue Poppy Glade, which is easily reachable along its accessibility trail. Visitors and nature-lovers alike will revel in this beautiful area, which is surrounded by flowering trees, such as Magnolia sieboldii and Stewartia pseudocamellia. KC Deez BBQ and Galaxy Donuts food trucks will also be on site with tasty fare. Attendees can take a piece of the festival home by joining in on the plant sale, purchasing art directly from artists and, if they're up to the horticultural challenge, adopting a magnificent Meconopsis of their own. The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the conservation, public display, and distribution of Rhododendron species.
